Netherworld & Pretty Little Thingz FX are excited to present The Monster Makeup Massacre, returning for it’s second year!

After this year’s hugely successful competition we’re thrilled to announce another comp coming February 23rd and 24th in 2019.

We’re inviting SFX creatives to compete in either the “Emerging Artists’ or ‘Pro’ categories to create the best monster your twisted minds can conjure up!

To Enter you will need to send us 8 – 10 images of your best work. Please be sure to read through the ‘How to Enter’ information below thoroughly! Entries close Saturday December 29th and should be submitted to info@netherworldarcade.com.

The best entries in each category will be selected and notified via email by Friday January 4th. Finalists will be invited to compete in the live makeup competition on the weekend of 23rd and 24th February 2019.

Saturday the 23rd will be the ‘Emerging Artists’ comp and will also include a range of demos and tutorials live on stage in the Netherworld.

Sunday the 24th will the ‘Pro’ Category comp and will also include our all-star industry panel of judges from within the Makeup, Film and Television industry.

The denizens of the Netherworld are invited to come and be a part of the whole weekend, with demos, catwalk and presentations happening throughout! For non-competing monster fans, we’ll be holding workshops earlier in the day in the arcade room covering SFX basics.

Gruesomely big prizes will be up for grabs for the winners of each category with guest judges, sponsors and prizes all to be announced.

HOW TO ENTER:

Simply answer the following questions and email them to info@netherworldarcade.com along with 6 – 10 images showcasing your previous work.

Images must be Jpegs or a zip file containing only jpegs. Links to websites, dropbox or any other format will not be accepted.

Please ensure your images are high quality clear photographs that show your best work.

More than 10 images will not be accepted. (images do not need to relate to this specific theme, but would be useful to include SPFX character makeup. Overly photoshopped images will be disregarded, a light edit is fine).

Entries MUST be received by 5pm Saturday 29th December. Finalists will be notified on Friday 4th January.

Judges decision will be final. Entrants will be required to participate in the live competition, please ensure your availability.

Emerging Artists will compete Saturday 23rd Feb 2019, Pro Artists will compete Sunday 24th Feb 2019. In the unlikely event that a finalist is unable to attend, the entry with the next highest score will be asked to participate.

COMPETITION RULES:

Entries must be received by 5pm Saturday 29th December at the latest. Finalists will be notified by email on Friday 4th January – finalists must reply to this email so we can confirm your place in the competition.

Please ensure you are available to attend the competition at Netherworld Arcade, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane on the following dates:

a. Emerging Artists from 9am Saturday 23rd Feb 2019 until judging has been completed and winners announced on stage in the afternoon.

b. Pro Artists from 9am Sunday 24th Feb 2019 until Judging has been completed and winners announced on stage in the afternoon.

In the unlikely event that a finalist is unable to attend, the entry with the next highest score will be asked to participate.

Models will be supplied by the contestants and will also need to be available during the times mentioned above

Emerging Artists Category will have 3.5 hours to complete their looks.

Pro Category will have 3 hours to complete their looks.

The Theme is “Monster Makeup’ which can be interpreted in in way you like – please see the photos below to for reference of the previous years entries.

There will be 2 Categories: ‘Emerging Artists’ and ‘Pro Artists. These categories are defined as:

Emerging Artists are those who are currently studying, or who have graduated within the last 12 months. This category is also open to amateurs who have not received professional training. I.E. If you’re a professional makeup artist with years of experience, this is not your category!

Pro Artists are those who have completed a qualification in Makeup/ Arts/ SPFX longer than 12 months ago, or those who are working in the industry as a professional artist. If you are working as a professional and do not hold a qualification, some form of proof may be required eg. Film credits, IMDB link etc.

On the day of competition you will be required from 9am at Netherworld for a brief run through.

Competition time is 3.5 hours for makeup application, for Emerging Artists and 3 hours for Pro Artists.

All brushes, equipment and makeup will need to be supplied by the entrant, no makeup will be supplied including cleansers, removers, disposables etc.

No assistants allowed during makeup application. Assistants may be used for removal.

Judging will happen immediately after the makeups are completed and the judges decision will be final. Scores will be tallied and winners announced live on stage at Netherworld.

Entrants will be judged using a score card and will be graded on:

a. Prosthetic design and application (taking note of the prosthetic piece ad how it was manufactured, applied and painted) __ / 10

b. Colouring techniques (use of colour, does the colouring enhance the makeup, approptiate products used, colouring techniques etc.) __ / 10

c. Overall workmanship __ / 10

d. Overall character design __ / 10

e. Bonus points for:

i. Hair styling or bald cap application __ / 5

ii. Costuming __ / 5

Models will be required to walk a runway and pose for photographs which will be published on Netherworld and Pretty Little Thingz FX social media sites. These may also be used to further promote the competition for future events. Contestants will also be provided images after the competition.

Artists are also encouraged to take photos or videos of the competition and characters during the event for their own use due to the busy nature of the event, and in the rare occurrence that we are not able to photograph every contestant. Please ensure to make yourself known to the event photographer if you have not had your work photographed on the day of competition.

All makeup must be completed on the day during set times, any makeup done prior to this time will be asked to be removed (i.e. no body painting in advance!).

Pre-tinted prosthetics are allowed, please do not pre colour or detail your entire piece though, as this competition is supposed to be about the artistry on the day. We will be encouraging our judges to question this painting process, and this will be reflected in the final judging process. Same will go for hair or wig styling prior to competition time.
