In early March, the creatures crawled out of the extreme depths of the Netherworld to walk a runway with the help of some of Queensland’s most talented professional and amateur makeup artists! We recently saw the first iteration of The Monster Makeup Massacre in which we invited people to compete in creating the best monster they could (on a willing victim/model) to be judged by SFX industry professionals.
For the event, we teamed up with Megan Farquharson of Pretty Little Thingz FX who organised the wrangling of these talented , monstrous individuals!
On the day itself, the finalists were whittled down to 8 entrants for the student/amateur category and 8 entrants for the professional. Each artist was given 3 hours to create their monstrosity and then a team of professional judges who kindly gave their time to the event looked after the scoring.
Meanwhile, while the audience patiently waiting we were treated to a couple of live makeup SFX demonstrations by Li-Sa Choi and Amy Cannon !
We also had a live Q & A with our guest judges – Chad Atkinson, Jac Charltlon, Nicola Richards, Kym Sainsbury, Sean Genders
and Jason Baird.
In the afternoon we were joined in an incredibly packed arcade room by the student/amateur and professional monsters with host Izzabelle Faith! It was a spectacular runway with some of the most creative, wild creatures you could imagine!
A massive congratulations to the winners of the categories and a massive thanks to our judges, all the sponsors who donated prizes for the contestants and especially to Megan for putting all of this together.
We’re extremely excited to announce that we’ll be back next year to do it all again – so stay tuned!
